DUDENDANCE THEATRE UK
SPACEMAN
Physical theatre piece with performer Paul Rous.
Running time 60 mins.

Paul in white paper dress made by Heather MacCrimmon

The piece is a tragic/comic investigation into the effects of human isolation from the profane to the profound. SPACEMAN draws inspiration from astronaut training procedures. In the very early days of space flight the dangers were an unknown quantity and the physical and psychological effects of leaving the earth could only be guessed at. SPACEMAN presents the performer within an imagined physical framework. He undergoes a series of evolutionary mutations rising from an animalistic state to becoming a fully “formed” mechanoid robot. The piece includes a new a sci-fi scenario written by Paul Rous. Inspired by treaties from NASA, 50’s kitsch Sci-Fi the story follows a lone survivor on a mission that is failing leaving him free floating in space. With an exciting sci-fi sound-score this physical theatre piece that will appeal to all ages.
Bookings available for touring autumn 2009 and spring 2010.

SPACEMAN will be shown at the Made in Scotland showcase @ Edinburgh festival 2009 and was recently shown at Arches LIVE festival in Glasgow:

….”Dudendance- Paul Rous and Clea Wallis- are based in Huntly (NE Scotland). Rous’s riveting work-in-progress SPACEMAN, makes you wish they were here more often. Taken as a piece of physical theatre his slow and meticulously detailed morphing from one inhabited “skin” – a dainty female to upright male, prowling animal to robotic machine- are thrillingly well done with incredible clarity and precision maintained throughout. Add in his own voiced over text about a space mission gone awry- and you gain a sense of how movement defines us and how an alien shape-shifting intelligence might seek to communicate through appearances….”
